What Type of Mattress is Best to Sleep On?

woman sleeping in cozy blue beddingWe’re sure you’ve probably wondered what type of mattress is best for you. With sleep being so important, who hasn’t?!

The truth is, there is no one-size-fits-all answer to this question. The most important thing is that you find a mattress that is comfortable for you and allows you to sleep well.

That being said, we generally recommend firmer mattresses to patients. While it’s true that softer mattresses may be more comfortable initially, they can cause you to sink in and put your spine into awkward positions over time. This can lead to discomfort and potentially even subluxations. On the other hand, firmer mattresses can help to keep your spine in a more neutral position while you sleep, which can improve overall comfort and support the healing process.

It’s also worth considering the size and additional features of your mattress. Extra padding and foam may not necessarily be helpful, and larger mattresses can be difficult to maneuver on, especially if you are a stomach sleeper. In general, less can be more when it comes to mattresses.

What About Pillows?

As for pillows, the same principles apply. It’s important to find a pillow that is comfortable and keeps your neck in a neutral position while you sleep. Avoid using excessively thick pillows, as they can put your neck into too much extension, leading to mouth breathing and potentially even subluxations.

At the end of the day, the most important thing is that you get a good night’s sleep. If you need to do “weird things” to sleep comfortably for a short time period, don’t be afraid to do so. The benefits of sleep far outweigh any potential drawbacks of an unconventional sleeping arrangement. Typically our patients find they either don’t need to sleep in weird positions like they normally would when under consistent chiropractic care.
